DR. ASHOK CHITKARA, CHANCELLOR

Born in Sept 1952, Dr. Ashok Chitkara has created benchmarks for generations to come. He made his foray into the field of Mathematics by doing B.Sc (Hons School) Mathematics, M.Sc (Hons) Mathematics from Delhi University. He was also awarded Gold Medal in his M.Sc. (Mathematics) for topping the Delhi University. He then went on to pursue his B.Ed, M.Ed and Ph. D, which chiseled him to perfections for teaching as a career. He has to his name the credit of contributing 25 research papers in various journals.

Dr. Ashok Chitkara started his career, spanning 31 year in teaching started in 1976 as PGT (Mathematics) at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Chandigarh, and then after completing his Ph.D in Mathematics from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak in 1985, he became a Reader of Mathematics at The Department of Evening Studies in Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Lauding his efforts and in appreciation of his contribution to the society, Dr. Ashok Chitkara has been awarded with:-

  • Bhartiya Shiromani Puraskar on August 5, 2005.
  • Shiksha Rattan Award on March 16, 2005.
  • Haryana Rattan Award in October 2008.
  • Indira Gandhi Sadbhavna Award in November 2008.
  • Shiksha Bharti Puraskar in December 2008.
  • National Status Award for Educational Development in December 2008.

He believes in a total commitment to society and thus the Trust under his proficient chairmanship has adopted nearby villages Jhansla and Fatehpurgarhi in Punjab through NSS, and provides free education to the children, and opportunities for self employment to adults. Women are involved in stitching and fabrication of uniforms which helps them become financially self sufficient. The Trust also provides health awareness programs in addition to extending health facilities to this village. A computer center has also been established in this village in order to create awareness amongst the residents about latest technology.

Being a fervent reader, he has a flair for languages and is widely traveled across the globe. He has an undying passion for transforming the lives of students and bringing about a change in the entire academic scenario.

BRIG (DR.) RS GREWAL, VSM, VICE-CHANCELLOR

Brig (Dr.) RS Grewal was commissioned in to the Corps of Engineers of the Indian Army in 1967. After retiring from the Army in 2002 he joined the Manipal Group. His more than 48 years of service includes proven track record of managing training institutions both in the Army and in the Universities. He has been the Director of Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology. Later he was the Pro Vice Chancellor of Sikkim Manipal University and also the first Director of ICICI Manipal Academy. Whilst in the Army, he was head of a 5500 strong technical training establishment and was also Head, Faculty of Civil Engineering at the College of Military Engineering, Pune. He was a member of faculty at the prestigious Defence Services Staff College, Wellington. His main forte has been perspective planning, policy formulation and plan implementation, industry-academia collaboration, developing inter-institutional tie ups including those with foreign universities, faculty development, pedagogical development and student relations. Apart from holding prestigious appointments in the Army, Brig Grewal has been Chief Engineer in the Border Roads Organisation in Eastern India in a terrain that is considered a logisticians nightmare. He has been serving as Vice Chancellor of Chitkara University.

His services were recognized by the President of India with the award of coveted Vishisht Sewa Medal.

He hails from a traditional Army family and is a fourth-generation army officer.

DR. VARINDER SINGH KANWAR, REGISTRAR

With a PhD in Civil Engineering and M.E. in Structural Engineering from Thapar University, Patiala, Dr. Varinder S. Kanwar carries more than 15 years of Research; Teaching and Administrative Experience. He has worked with institutes like NIT Hamirpur, Government Polytechnic, Hamirpur, Thapar University Patiala and Punjab Technical University, Jalandhar. He also has more than 10 research papers in National and International Journals to his credit and about 25 research papers in conferences. He has already guided various ME student’s Thesis work and continues to provide guidance to PhD and ME/M Tech students in the area of Civil Engineering. He is an active member of various societies like ASCE, Indian Concrete Institute [ICI], Institution of Engineers and Punjab Science Congress.

DR. RAJNISH SHARMA, DEAN ACADEMICS

Having completed his research work at National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi and obtaining his Ph.D. in Electronic Science from Kurukshetra University in 2002, Dr. Rajnish Sharma served Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani for almost 6 years of duration. At BITS, along with teaching, he handled a large number of academic and administrative responsibilities like holding position of Secretary, Birla Institutions Community Center (BICC, Pilani), Warden, Bhagirath Bhawan, Incharge, Test Scheduling and President, BITS Staff Association etc. He also co convened two national level workshops for academicians and industry professionals sponsored by DST, CSIR, AICTE, IEEE and Genesis Microchip as well during his tenure at BITS in year 2005 and 2006 respectively.

Having completed his research work at National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi and obtaining his Ph.D. in Electronic Science from Kurukshetra University in 2002, Dr. Rajnish Sharma served Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani for almost 6 years of duration. At BITS, along with teaching, he handled a large number of academic and administrative responsibilities like holding position of Secretary, Birla Institutions Community Center (BICC, Pilani), Warden, Bhagirath Bhawan, Incharge, Test Scheduling and President, BITS Staff Association etc. He also co convened two national level workshops for academicians and industry professionals sponsored by DST, CSIR, AICTE, IEEE and Genesis Microchip as well during his tenure at BITS in year 2005 and 2006 respectively.

His main area of research and teaching has been oriented towards electronic devices and possible exploration of technology for further scaling of MOS devices. In totality, he has got 12 years of teaching and research experience. He has got 14 research papers in International and national journals and conferences along with one book by Oxford University Press to his credit. He has presented a part of his research work at Materials Research Society Symposium held at San Francisco, CA, USA in March, 2005 and also at Risoe National Laboratory, Roskilde, Denmark. Currently, he is also handling a research project sanctioned by Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India. In past, he has been a member of professional societies like IEEE, Materials Research Society (MRS), USA, ISTE and Indian Carbon Society.

With an ardent desire to excel in academics and to make a commendable contribution towards education, he has been guiding students for their right career paths and enjoys each and every element of responsibility assigned to him. He believes in giving more than 100 % to any tasks the he undertakes and always strives hard to achieve excellence. A strong believer of the dictum that, “A Teacher’s task is not only to teach students, but also to make them useful citizens of this society”, he owes a lot of this kind of sense developed in him to his teachers.

He has been instrumental in planning and implementation of a unique kind of academic system at School of Engineering and Technology.
